Plastic consumption in the United States reached 84.3 million metric tons in 2019, most ending up in landfills and eventually, our bodies. A study commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund suggested the average person ingests about 5 grams of plastic every week. BIOWEG 's goal is to replace harmful ingredients in our everyday products and to change the way that we see packaging, personal care products, and food. 

BIOWEG is a German company founded by two entrepreneurs, Prateek M. and Srinivas Karuturi. There are many products that BIOWEG produces, such as their biodegradable seed coatings that are being developed with a partnership at Bayer Crop Science division, or their bacterial cellulose developed in partnership with Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. Bioworks. In addition, their MicBead and RheoWeg products are gaining significant attention. These products aim to replace synthetic polymers that are commonly found in personal skincare and beauty products. These products are biodegradable and are said to even outdo petro-sourced polymers in terms of absorption power, texture, and sensory qualities.

BIOWEG was named one of the top 3 sustainability startups by the LVMH Innovation Award in 2023 and won the "Raw Materials" category at the Cosmetic 360 Awards 2023. They were also selected as the International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre (ISC3) Start-up of the Month in February 2024. They have many strategic partnerships such as the aforementioned Bayer Crop Science Division and Ginko Biowoks along with doing publicly-funded research projects with the German Institute for Food Technology.
